Limewood | Hong Kong

Rating: ❤❤❤❤

Limewood is the latest venture by Maximal Concepts behind Blue Butcher, Fish & Meat and Brickhouse. The beach-side location is perfect for its specialty - barbecued meat and seafood with a mix of Southeast Asian, Hawaiian, South American and Caribbean flavors! Prices are in line with its Soho counterparts with starters ranging from under $100-$200 and mains starting from $200+. I love the casual beachy decor in the restaurant which seemingly transports diners to Southeast Asia - I suspect this will be wildly popular come warmer weather!

For those who live on the south side, the restaurant has teamed up with Food Panda for home delivery! Check it out at www.foodpanda.hk

During the day, the windows are all facing the beach are all opened for a more airy atmosphere.

As it is winter time, they close the windows at night but you can still enjoy the sunset through the big windowpanes.

The menu was short and simple with four main sections - Cold and Hot appetizers, Meats and Whole Fish. J and I got one from each section to share between the two of us.

Pomegranate & Watermelon Margarita ($120) - I started my meal with their specialty - margaritas! The price was a bit steep but the tequila was quite strong so at least you are getting your money's worth. I couldn't taste the pomegranate in the cocktail though but I did like the jalapeno in it which spiced things up a bit. The dehydrated pomegranates salt rim was also a nice touch as I thought they were dried rose petals at first. [3.5/5]

Vietnamese Crab Salad ($125) - served with creamed coconut corn, shishito peppers, and toasted nuts. The crab was quite average to be honest as it tasted like a crab dip you can get at Costco instead of fresh crab meat but the Yuzu sauce turned this otherwise ordinary dish into something special. The pairing was innovative and what really made this salad work. [4/5]

Jerked Coconut Corn ($75) - with sriracha mayo and toasted coconut, this appetizer was irresistible with a combination of sweet, tangy and spicy flavors! Who knew that toasted coconut would go so well with corn and I just loved the contracting textures of the crispy coconut bits with the soft juicy corn. [4.5/5]

Whole Roasted Butterflied Free-Range Baby Chicken ($250) - with charred lime marinade and roasted pineapple salsa. Loved the charred crispy skin on the chicken so much! Too bad the meat in the center was inevitably dry and lean but a bite with the juicy pineapple salsa was delicious nonetheless. [4/5]

Charred Whole Sea Bream ($245) - if the decor doesn't make you feel like you are on the beach somewhere in Southeast Asia, then this well executed fish dish definitely will! Topped with a sweet chilli glaze and green papaya & radish salad tossed with yuzu vinaigrette, the fish was cooked perfectly with a soft flaky flesh. Again I just loved the charred fish skin with the chili glaze on it! [4/5]

Hand Piped Churros ($90) - OMG these must be the best churros I have eaten in HK yet! Served with coconut ice cream and salty caramel, the churros were amazingly scrumptious as they were crunchy on the outside and yet fluffy soft on the inside. Dipping them in the salty caramel was just heavenly to eat! [5/5]

Verdict - prices were on a bit on the high side as our meal ending up costing $500 per person but I do think that Limewood has something unique to offer - a beach-side dining experience with a twist of barbecue cuisines from around the world!
